On May 19, 2011, a prominent Russian philologist, linguist, Mongolian scholar, Doctor of Philology Maria Nikolaevna Orlovskaya turned 85 years old.

M. N. Orlovskaya (nee - Zhdannikova) was born in 1926 in the village of Mantrovo, Smolensk region. During the Great Patriotic War, she worked at a defense enterprise in Moscow, and at the same time studied at the school of working youth. In 1950, she graduated from the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies and has been working at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences ever since. She taught Mongolian at the Diplomatic Academy (VDS, 1960-1974), as well as at the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1973-1974).

She received the degree of Candidate of Philological Sciences for her thesis " The main nominal parts of speech in the Mongolian language (nouns and adjectives) "(1953). The degree of Doctor of Philology was awarded for the report "The language of monuments of Mongolian writing (XIII-XIV centuries and XVII centuries)" (1995).

Maria Nikolaevna is a rare specialist in the field of text linguistics of monuments of the Mongolian script, as well as the largest researcher of the grammar of the Mongolian languages: Middle Mongolian (pre-classical), classical periods, as well as modern living (literary and non-written) Mongolian languages. She has published about 120 scientific papers, including 4 monographs. A number of articles have been published in English and Mongolian.

M. N. Orlovskaya's first monograph "Nouns and Adjectives in the modern Mongolian language" (19611) was published on the basis of her PhD thesis. The linguistic base of the monograph is socio-political, artistic, linguistic (educational) literature in the Mongolian language. In the Introduction, the author considered controversial issues of nominal parts of speech in the Mongolian language, which have not yet been resolved. Nouns and adjectives in the modern Mongolian language were studied by her in the aspects of word formation and inflection, as well as at lexical-semantic, morphological and syntactic levels, which allowed the author to explore the nature of the main parts of speech in the Mongolian language in a new, more meaningful interpretation. She wrote a large section "Noun" for the first academic " Grammar of the Buryat language "(1962).

In 1960-1970, a new direction in Mongolistics emerged - the study of language and grammar (text linguistics), monuments of the Mongolian script of the XIII-XIV centuries. Maria Nikolaevna began to develop this direction, studying monuments of the Mongolian script of the studied period, called linguistic source studies, in accordance with the research plan of the Institute of Oriental Languages of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the topic "Studying the history of languages of Eastern Countries".

So, M. N. Orlovskaya immersed herself in the study of the text "Altan Tobchi" by Lubsan Danzan, published by the Mongolian Scientific Committee of the MPR. Published in 1984, her monograph "The Altan Tobchi Language" marked the emergence of linguistic source studies in Mongolia in those years. Undoubtedly, "The Hidden Legend of the Mongols" and "Altan Tobchi" by Lubsan Danzan have a lot in common. She conducted a comparative analysis of these monuments in grammatical and lexical-semantic aspects. The author conducted a morphological analysis of the text "Altan Tobchi", revealing for linguists a lot of interesting and previously unknown things.

The book was not published for a long time, it appeared on the shelves only six years later. M. N. Orlovskaya's work was published in Inner Mongolia (China) in Chinese.

The monograph " The Language of Mongolian texts of the XIII-XIV centuries "(Moscow, 2000) is devoted to the description of the morphological structure of the preclassic Mongolian language. The author drew attention to the fact that,

page 210

that grammatical research of the language of early texts was most often limited to their publications, historical and philological commentaries on them, or the study of particular grammar issues with the involvement of some language data. M. N. Orlovskaya showed that the original grammatical system has basically survived to this day and that various morphological systems and categories are linked to a complete picture of the dynamics of the language, in its grammar. M. N. Orlovskaya's work is fundamentally different in its content and novelty from the works of her predecessors-N. N. Poppe, L. Ligeti, G. D. Sanzheev, Ts. B. Tsydendambayev, Tömörtoglu and others, as well as Turkologists and Altaists.

M. N. Orlovskaya's" Essays on the grammar of the language of ancient Mongolian texts " became the result of a study of the historical fate of the syllable and speech of the Mongolian language at the beginning of the XIII-XV centuries and a new achievement of post-Soviet Mongolistics.

M. N. Orlovskaya did not prepare a shift for herself, but the prospects of a new direction in the study of text grammar in Mongolian linguistics attracted other Buryat and Kalmyk linguists. Among them - N. D. Asirova, B. V. Badmaev, E. V. Bembeev, L. B. Badmaeva, B. D. Tsyrenov and others.

M. N. Orlovskaya was awarded several medals and a certificate of honor "For valiant labor in the Great Patriotic War" (1941-1945), the jubilee medal "50 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945", etc.

Colleagues congratulate Maria Nikolaevna Orlovskaya on her anniversary, wish her good health and new achievements in her multifaceted scientific work for the benefit of the national and world Mongolian studies.
