Museum Marc Chagall in Nice: the master's biblical message on the French Riviera

Introduction: a unique monographic project

The National Museum of Marc Chagall in Nice (fr. Musée National Marc Chagall) is the only museum in the world entirely dedicated to the artist's work, created and opened with his direct participation and approval. It presents not a retrospective in the classic sense, but a complete "ensemble," conceived by the master himself as a monumental statement on an eternal theme. The museum opened in 1973 and has been a "National" museum since 2008, under the management of the French Ministry of Culture. Its architecture, location, and principle of exhibition are subordinate to one goal — to create a special space for contemplating Chagall's main cycle of works from the late period: the "Biblical Message."

History of creation: a gift to France

The initiative to create the museum came from André Malraux, the Minister of Culture of France and a distinguished writer, who conducted a policy of creating monographic museums for modern artists in the 1960s (alongside the museums of Léger and Picasso). Chagall, who had been living on the French Riviera since 1949, responded to this idea. He personally participated in choosing the location — a quiet plot on the hill of Simie, far from bustling tourist routes, and controlled the architectural project. The main gift of the artist to the state was a large collection of 17 large canvases that form the core of the "Biblical Message." Later, the museum's collection was supplemented by gifts from the artist himself, his heirs, and patrons.

Architecture and space: a temple of light and color

The museum building, designed by the architect André Hermant, is an example of restrained and elegant modernism. It perfectly fits into the Mediterranean landscape. Key elements:

Natural light: The architect and the artist jointly considered the lighting system. Upper light from special lanterns and high windows create soft, diffused lighting that reveals the full depth and brilliance of Chagall's color palette, especially the blue and red tones.

Mosaic "Prophet Elijah": Before entering, the visitor sees a large mosaic by Chagall on the facade, dedicated to the Prophet Elijah ascending in a fiery chariot. This is a prologue to the biblical theme.

Ambient and garden: In the inner courtyard, a Mediterranean garden has been planted, and in the concert hall-ambient, one can see the stained glass "Creation of the World" and the painted ceiling by Chagall, highlighting the synthetic nature of his art, combining painting, music, and poetry.

Core of the collection: "The Biblical Message"

The central hall of the museum is a space specially designed for 12 large paintings illustrating the Book of Genesis ("Creation of the World") and the Book of Exodus ("The Promised Land"). These works, created between 1954 and 1967, are not a literal illustration, but a deeply personal, emotional, and mystical experience of sacred texts. Chagall interprets the Bible as a universal poem about human passions, sufferings, love, and hope. The compositions are built on the characteristic principles of the artist: floating figures, dreamlike logic of space, symbolic animals (ass, rooster, fish), bright color contrasts. The paintings are arranged in chronological order, allowing to pass from the Creation of the World to the entry into the Promised Land.

Other significant works
In addition to the main cycle, the museum also presents:

5 paintings on the theme of "The Song of Songs" — a separate hall dedicated to the lyrical and sensuous poem that Chagall interpreted as a hymn to the all-conquering love. These works, gifted by the artist in 1966, are distinguished by especially intense, burning red color.

Gallery of graphics: An extensive collection of more than 300 sketches, gouaches, pastels, and engravings, including all 105 etchings for the Bible executed by Chagall in the 1930s on the order of the Parisian marshall Ambroise Vollard. These works demonstrate the meticulous preparation for the monumental canvases.

Sculpture and ceramics: A small but significant section showing the artist's experiments with volume and material.

Scientific and cultural mission

The museum is not only an exhibition space but also a research center. Here, there is an extensive archive of photographs, letters, and documents. The museum regularly holds temporary exhibitions that contextualize Chagall's work, showing his connections with other artists, literature, music, and biblical tradition. The concert hall with its unique acoustics has become a venue for the performance of chamber and spiritual music (Mozart, Bach, Stravinsky), which fully corresponds to Chagall's idea of the synthesis of arts.

Interesting facts

Prize-winning triumph: Chagall is one of the few artists who were honored with a personal national museum in their country of residence during their lifetime. This is a testament to France's deepest respect for his talent.

Color as the main character: The artist personally consulted the architects on issues of wall color in the halls. He chose white, which serves as an ideal neutral background, allowing his rich palette to "sound" to its full extent.

Connection with Vitebsk: Despite the French context, the spirit of the native city is present in the works. In the biblical patriarchs, one can sometimes recognize the images of Vitebsk elders, and in landscapes — memories of Belarusian plains, reinterpreted through the prism of the Mediterranean.

Symbolic garden: The plants in the museum garden (olives, cypresses, pines) refer to the biblical flora and landscapes of Provence, creating a smooth transition between art inside and nature outside.

Conclusion: a total work of art

The Museum of Marc Chagall in Nice is more than a collection of paintings. It is a total artistic work (Gesamtkunstwerk), where architecture, painting, mosaic, stained glass, landscape design, and music create a single meditative environment. It allows you to immerse yourself in the spiritual quest of the artist, for whom the Bible was not a religious dogma, but a source of eternal poetic and humanistic truths. The museum does not summarize all of Chagall's work, but focuses on his most important late chapter, presenting the master as a profound thinker and monumentalist whose art speaks in a universal language of color, symbol, and compassion. This is a place of silence and contemplation where Chagall's message, transcending the boundaries of countries and epochs, has found its eternal home under the sun of Nice.
